MountKenya's Political Extinction.
Is it mountKenya's political extinction?
It's shocking how some few days ago, as we were having a cup of tea with two gentlemen of Somali extraction. As is habit before the main agenda, we allowed ourselves to digress and delve into all manner of topics. Animatedly, the older one couldn't hide his excitement on two issues. One, that the Agîkûyû as a community are on the verge of extinction. And Somalis, who on average marry up to Four wives and get upwards of 20 chidren are taking their pride of place in Kenya as the most populous community. Moreover, they have taken almost all hotels in the city centre, he asserted. And they won't stop there. He expanded his thesis that because the Somalis are more cohesive and are able to pool resources, they are taking over residential areas, building skyscrapers, malls and all manner of investments in neighbourhoods hitherto owned by Kikuyus.Further, but in a conspiratorial tone, he insinuated that progressively, Somalis from neighbouring countries are (illegally) relocating and settling in Eastleigh and its neighbourhood, further burgeoning their numbers. His final salvo was that today, Eastleigh has more dollars than the Kenya's treasury and contributes more in taxes than all Mt Kenya Counties combined! And that our taxes now end up in North Eastern Counties with the One Kilometre One Shilling formulae. On the second issue, he celebrated what he called the "Ruto genius". That in a record five years, Ruto has managed to completely vanquish the political influence of the Agîkûyû by isolating, maligning, and character-assassinating their visionaries and the wealthy, balkanizing the community through social stratification of haves and haves-not, and elevating their most mediocre men and women to positions of leadership. Key positions in government, he noted, are now in the hands of Somalis, Kalenjin and Luyhias. The Kikuyu tûgeges in Parliament and the Cabinet will sing to whatever tune Ruto played, he laughed.
This got me thinking. Could it be true? We marry one wife. An average Kikuyu family has Three children. Most of our primary schools have an average of 100 children, down from an average of 600 a few years ago. Our traditional economic mainstay of tea, coffee and milk has been reduced to a shell. It is true that if you walked into any hotel in Nairobi, 90% of the patrons will be Somalis. And it is also true that they have bought all hotel premises and built new ones: Kilimanjaro, Beirut, Pronto, CJs, Savanna and all manner of names. And Somalis are in control of the Ministry of Defence, the DCI, NIS and various other powerful sectors of the government. Meanwhile, the masses in the entire Mt Kenya region do not appear to appreciate their predicaments. They gladly fight their own, their MPs vote against the interests of the region, their children cannot afford quality education due to reduced bursary allocation, that our people fought against extra Constituencies, extra sharable revenue and even against Minimum Guarantee Returns for our Coffee, Tea and Macadamia. Macadamia and coffee are already in a sorry financial state. What is the situation back in our villages? I quickly in my mind peek at our small towns: Naromoru, Kiganjo, Chaka, Karatina, Nyeri, Mûkûrwe-inî, Othaya, Kangema, Mûrang'a, Kahuhia, Maragûa, Runyenjes, Nyahururu, Gatanga, Ol Karao, Timau, Nanyuki, Merû, Kagumo, Kîanyaga, Nkûbû, Embu, Thîka, Kerugoya, Kutus, Makûyû, Kagio, Sagana, Ngurubani - nothing seems to be moving.Buildings are old, greying, dilapidated and in desolate state of disrepair. Hardly are there new buildings coming up, an indication of reduced wealth, scarce resources, dwindling investments and repressed disposable income in the region. Are we on our deathbed as a community? Is it true that Ruto has managed to behead the Agîkûyû genie in all sectors: political, economic, social, religious, enterprise, educational? Could the observation by my Somali friend be accurate? I doubt Yes, then possed; Are we represented well at all levels? Are Gachagua, Kuria, Ichung'wa, Nyoro and the host of MPs, CSs and CASs from the region championing the interests of the country and their community in the right pace, energy, skills and vigour? Do they possess the right skills, competencies, tact, discernment and statecraft to ensure that as the country grows, we are not left behind and that we don't perish?
In other words, how genuinely would you rate your respective local leaders: Your:Governor, Senator, MP, W/Rep, MCA? You elected on that day some termed it as Passover. Are you represented as you desired when you voted them into government? Are you satisfied by it's key agendas .
